How much it will really cost Chelsea to sack Antonio Conte?

There have been some spurious figures bandied around concerning Antonio Conte potential pay-off from Chelsea, with some Spanish reports claiming he’s due more than £26million in compensation.

Arsenal would replace Arsene Wenger with Antonio Conte, reckons Paul Merson

But the reality is, the actual amount will be closer to half that fee.

Chelsea had hoped to tie the Italian down to an extended deal last summer, keeping him at Stamford Bridge until 2021, but they were unable to agree that extension and instead just gave him a payrise.

Figures citing the £26.3m pay-off fee are based on his contract running in that extended period, when he would really only be handed slightly more than his £9.6m-a-year deal.

His contract expires at the end of June 2019 meaning he would be handed a sum of £12.8m if Chelsea were to show him the exit door this week.

Of course, that figure may be higher due to compensation fees for other backroom staff members that would inevitably depart alongside him.

Jose Mourinho wanted to sign Manchester United new boy Alexis Sanchez for Chelsea

Chelsea are no strangers to large managerial pay-offs, with Jose Mourinho and his coaching team thought to have pocketed a remarkable £30m for being given the boot at the end of his two spells at Stamford Bridge .

But the Blues can perhaps breathe a sigh of relief that they were unable to extend former Juventus boss Conte’s deal in the summer – it’s most likely saved them in excess of £12m.
